Spermidine in Studies

While spermidine has been found to decrease mortality in yeast, mice, and other model organisms, more and more studies are looking at the potential positive effects of spermidine supplementation in humans.  In “Spermidine delays aging in humans,” the authors discuss recent findings that point to the association between increased spermidine and decreased “overall, cardiovascular, and cancer-related mortality in humans” as well as the “possible mechanisms of this intriguing effect.” [1]

In “Higher spermidine intake is linked to lower mortality: a prospective population-based study,” the link between dietary spermidine and mortality in humans was examined through food questionnaires administered over 15 years.  The authors found that human mortality decreased with diets higher in spermidine content. [2]

Researchers found that topical spermidine treatment significantly accelerates wound healing in a study published in 2021 in Cell Communication and Signaling. [3]

The potential for spermidine to be used as a therapeutic agent in various optical diseases is explored in the study “Research Progress and Potential Applications of Spermidine in Ocular Diseases.” [4]

The effect of spermidine supplementation in cabbage was studied in “Screening of spermidine-mediated improvement of plant growth, photosynthetic performance, metabolites, and nutrition acquisition in six cabbage varieties.”  The authors found that the application of spermidine to cabbage enhanced growth and nutritional quality and lead to more resilient and nutrient rich cabbages.
